DevOps Meetup at Bazaarvoice

Ever thought that your one comment or review would get lost? Or on the other side when you were looking for a product, just one review changed your mind?
I want to talk here about yesterday’s meetup hosted by Bazaarvoice. These situational questions are exactly where Bazaarvoice was brought to life. They give voice to every little authentic review. For businesses it means that, they turn situation around. They are not selling a product anymore but an experience which came from people using that specific product.
Some funfacts:
Black Friday Week
2.9 milion reviews submitted
98.1K of consumer asked questions
Bazaarvoice platform managed volume of 53 Bilion web requests were 77 milion were categorized as malicious and immediately blocked
Imagine this amount of scale. Bazaarvoice infra must be flexibly for those spikes, (like Black Friday) They have 12 clusters. Main topic was Kyverno a CNCF project. A way to manage K8s policies. In Kyverno they can create rules for deployment, those can be so granular such as which registries can be used to pull image from or to restrict dependency pull inside of an image, so it provides very high precision targeting. Any pod, node or user can be filtered by its type metadata and labels…
The flow they use is to audit all logs, find what’s happening. Create policies around that. Do data-driven cleanup of the cluster with direct targeting. Prevent deployments that are out of policy.
All of this data can flow over OTel into Datadog. This provides complete observability. Great feature is instant feedback, whatever happens (policy breaches) will get reported straight after. There is terraform module for easy deployment.
This was part one of devops meetup in Belfast. A speak by Shane O'Hanlon.
